Electric racing KS3 algebra Ages 11–14
The algebra game that actually gets played
Your car has a number. Batteries stream past showing equations. Pick the one that's true for your x — charge ahead, race three circuits, master substitution.

How it works
Racing and algebra, inseparable
Your car shows a value
Each race your car displays a number — the value of x. Hold it in your head. That's your starting point for every decision you make.
Batteries stream past
Equations flash past on battery tokens. Each one is a full algebraic statement — like 3x + 1 = 13 or x² − 2 > 10. You have to work out which one is true for your x value.
Pick correctly to charge ahead
Tap the right battery and your car surges forward. Pick wrong and you stall. Every opponent is solving their own equations simultaneously — their x values are different to yours.
Three circuits
From simple substitution to cubic expressions
The game's three circuits take players through the full KS3 algebra substitution strand — starting with straightforward linear equations and building to multi-term expressions with negative and decimal values.
Simple linear equations · two-operation expressions
Start with expressions like 3x + 1 and 4x − 3. Learn what substitution means and build speed and confidence before the equations get harder.
Brackets · powers · negative x values · inequalities
Expressions like 2(x + 3) − x and 2x² + 1. Brackets must be evaluated first. Negative values of x introduce the most common mistake in algebra — squaring a negative — and the game targets it deliberately.
Multi-term expressions · cubic · decimal x values
Four-term expressions like x³ + 2x² + 3x + 4, with x values that are decimals. The hardest expressions in the KS3 substitution strand, made approachable through racing momentum.
Your opponents
Six drivers, six personalities
Every opponent has their own x value and their own style. Blitz is fast and makes lots of mistakes. Amp is slow and almost never wrong. Learn their patterns — it's part of the game.
Spark
Good to beat early — builds confidence
Volt
The steady all-rounder
Blitz
Fast but reckless — boom and bust
Amp
Slow, precise, almost never wrong
Surge
Unpredictable — different every race
Apex
Fast and accurate — the final challenge
NPC traits are never shown as numbers in the game. Players learn their opponents through experience.
The garage
Earn Voltage Points. Build your car.
Every race earns Voltage Points — win more, answer faster, keep a hot streak going. Spend them in the garage on chassis, paint zones, decals, and number plates. Eight chassis to unlock, from the starter Bolt to the prestige Zenith. All cosmetic — no pay-to-win.
- 8 distinct chassis to unlock
- 5 independently colourable paint zones per chassis
- Livery patterns, racing stripes, and illustrated graphics
- Custom car number and identifier
- No real-money purchases — everything earned through gameplay
For schools
Using this in your classroom?
Volt Racers covers the KS3 substitution strand across all three circuits. School licences are available from £30 per year, cover unlimited students, work in a browser with no app install, and include a Data Processing Agreement.

Accessibility is not an afterthought
Volt Racers ships with a full accessibility suite — not as a patch after launch, but built in from the start.
- Dyslexia-friendly font (OpenDyslexic) — toggle on or off
- Colour-blind modes — deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia palettes
- Difficulty indicators use shape as well as colour — never colour alone
- Reduced motion mode — respects your OS setting automatically
- High contrast mode — WCAG AAA on interactive elements
- Full keyboard navigation — Tab to cycle batteries, Enter to select
- Screen reader support — equations exposed via MathML
- All settings sync across devices and persist between sessions
